Estimating intermittency in three-dimensional Navier–Stokes turbulence
نویسنده
چکیده
The issue of why computational resolution in Navier-Stokes turbulence is so hard to achieve is addressed. It is shown that Navier-Stokes solutions can potentially behave differently in two distinct regions of space-time R± where R− is comprised of a union of disjoint space-time ‘anomalies’. Large values of |∇ω| dominate R−, which is consistent with the formation of vortex sheets or tightly-coiled filaments. The local number of degrees of freedom N± needed to resolve the regions in R± satisfies N±(x, t) ≶ c±Ru where Ru = uL/ν is a Reynolds number dependent on the local velocity field u(x, t).

Resource Letter TF-1: Turbulence in Fluids
This Resource Letter provides a guide to the literature on fully developed turbulence in fluids. It is restricted to mechanically driven turbulence in an incompressible fluid described by the Navier-Stokes equations of hydrodynamics, and places greatest emphasis on fundamental physical questions. Journal articles and books are cited for the following topics: The Navier-Stokes equations, qualita...
متن کاملA closure model for intermittency in three dimensional incompressible turbulence
A simplified Lagrangean closure for the Navier-Stokes equation is used to study the production of intermittency in the inertial range of three dimensional turbulence. This is done using localized wavepackets following the fluid rather than a standard Fourier basis. In this formulation, the equation for the energy transfer acquires a noise term coming from the fluctuations in the energy content ...
متن کاملIntermittency in two-dimensional Ekman-Navier-Stokes turbulence.
We study the statistics of the vorticity field in two-dimensional Navier-Stokes turbulence with linear Ekman friction. We show that the small-scale vorticity fluctuations are intermittent, as conjectured by Bernard [Europhys. Lett. 50, 333 (2000)] and Nam et al. [Phys. Rev. Lett. 84, 5134 (2000)]. The small-scale statistics of vorticity fluctuations coincide with that of a passive scalar with f...
متن کاملIntermittency and regularity issues in 3 D Navier - Stokes turbulence ⋆
Two related open problems in the theory of 3D Navier-Stokes turbulence are discussed in this paper. The first is the phenomenon of intermittency in the dissipation field. Dissipation-range intermittency was first discovered experimentally by Batchelor and Townsend over fifty years ago. It is characterized by spatio-temporal binary behaviour in which long, quiescent periods in the velocity signa...
